The American Academy of Dermatology calls today Melanoma Monday and is targeting one group in particular: Men over age 50.

It might surprise you to know that researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center just completed the first test of sunscreen’s ability to protect yourself against melanoma.

While majority of skin cancers are relatively not fatal, other types can be deadly such as the case of melanoma which accounts for nearly 75% of all skin cancer deaths as per WhatHealth report.

An educational table with skin cancer resources, screening information and hard copies of the calendar will be in the lobby of the Somerset County Administration Building at 20 Grove St., Somerville, throughout the month of May.

While melanoma is typically more common in people with white, fair skin, Dr. Kassouf said that any prolonged exposure to high levels of ultraviolet rays can increase a person’s melanoma risk. The most important warning sign for skin cancer is a new spot on the skin or a spot that is changing in size, shape or color.

They say if you missed Monday’s clinic but would like to get a screening, appointments can be made at either practice. “This form of cancer is highly treatable when caught early”.
