Membership surge means 100000 can vote in Labour party’s mayoral contest

He is competing with Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall to succeed Ed Miliband, who quit after the Conservatives retained power in May’s election.

The glitch happened as the party struggled to cope with nearly 250,000 new members and supporters, each of whom is being checked to make sure they are not “entryists” from other parties trying to influence the result.

Few expected that Britain’s two largest labour unions, which have a major say in the party’s politics, would back Corbyn instead of Burnham, who has not impressed – but they did. This process continues until one candidate gets more than half of the vote.

Prominent among those blocked were journalist Toby Young, film director Ken Loach, Tory MP Tim Loughton and Conservative peer Lord Callanan.

“I would not attempt to sway the leadership election – it may be damaging to the Labour Party to have Jeremy Corbyn elected but it would also be very damaging to the country, and therefore is not something that should be treated as a joke”.

First Minister Carwyn Jones has not named his preferred candidate, but has said veteran left-winger Mr Corbyn would be an “unusual choice” for the party.

In other words, he’s nearly certainly going to be the next leader of the Labour Party.

Supporters were met with a series of error messages as they attempted to register for a vote ahead of the planned midday cut-off.

The process to offer registered supporters a vote on the leadership has proved controversial, with a number of MPs calling for a re-run over allegations that it has been exploited by hard-left groups and political opponents including Conservative activists.
