While Abdulazeez sometimes expressed misgivings about US policy in the Mideast, his feelings didn’t seem extreme and there was no indication he was involved with terrorist groups while in Jordan, the family representative said.
But a family spokesman described the writings, which are at least a year old, as, in the words of The Times, “a loose assemblage” of Abdulazeez’s thoughts.
The rep said that a child psychiatrist had treated Abdulazeez for depression when he was as young as 12 or 13, and that his family had sought to place him in rehab years ago, but the request was denied by the health insurance company.
‘For many years, our son suffered from depression.
A law enforcement official told the New York Times investigators were looking into a text message Abdulazeez allegedly sent to a friend hours before the shooting to probe possible motives.
“They do not know of anything else to explain it”, said the representative, who has been involved with the family since the shootings. “It grieves us beyond belief to know that his pain found its expression in this heinous act of violence”.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has asked foreign intelligence agencies to help trace Abdulazeez’s movements and activities overseas, and analysts are monitoring his activity on social media.
The text read, “Whoever shows enmity to a friend of mine, then I have declared war against him”.
Abdulazeez, 24, was a naturalized USA citizen born in Kuwait.
News of a diary comes as 30 FBI agents arrive today in Chattanooga, joining more 100 already there.
Abdulazeez was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence April 20.
A friend of Abdulazeez said he last saw the 24-year-old at a local mosque just last Saturday, where Abdulazeez was helping to clean up for Ramadan.
There was evidence that he came from a troubled family. In her petition Rasmia Abdulazeez also alleged that her husband Youssuf Abdulazeez had beaten his children on occasion. In May 2013, Abdulazeez, an electrical engineering student, lost a job at a nuclear power plant in Ohio after testing positive for both prescription and illegal drugs.
“The expanded measures are to increase vigilance and sustain security of military personnel and facilities”, Miller says. Monday the governor of Texas ordered National Guard members to carry guns on base, saying military personal must have the ability to defend themselves.
The gunman killed four Marines and a sailor during an attack on two military facilities Thursday.
