Memorial Day ceremonies set for local area
The city of Rio Rancho on Monday will observer Memorial Day with a parade and remembrance ceremony. The group will then march to the Civil War Monunment at the junction of Classic and High Streets to honor the dead of the Civil War at 8:40 a.m. A Memorial Day program will follow in Irvine Park at the bandshell. The route is on Camino del Pueblo from Camino del Bosque to Loretto Park.

At 6:15 p.m. The Honor Guard will conduct a flag retirement and burning ceremony and properly dispose of unserviceable American flags. They will muster at 8:30 a.m.at Mother’s Kitchen in Poplar before visiting the following cemeteries: 9 a.m.at Lakeside Cemetery; 9:30 a.m.at Maple Cemetery; 10 a.m.at Blueberry Cemetery; 10:30 a.m.
For family members who are unable to attend the ceremony, the Legion requests floral arrangements be dropped off by 10:30 a.m. the day of the ceremony.
“We’ve got a tradition out at the post, of sponsoring different events on Memorial Day, mainly putting the flags on the graves of the deceased veterans”, Bill Youngern, a member of the Legion Post and a U.S. Army veteran, said.
Brainard: Mass at 9:30 a.m.at Brainard Holy Trinity Church; American Legion Services at 10:30 a.m.at the new Catholic Cemetery.
On Sunday, May 29 at 11:30 a.m., Pompton Lakes will hold its annual Memorial Day Parade.
■ At the Western Slope Vietnam War Memorial, 340 Highway 340 in Fruita, a motorcycle club made up of Vietnam War veterans will dedicate a memorial bench. Parade will return to Legion Hall via Main Street and Beach streets.
Remembering those who lost their lives while serving their country will be the theme of a county-wide Memorial Day event on Monday.
Marchers will proceed up Hamburg Turnpike to Main Street in Butler and turn left onto Park Place, advancing to Butler Park, where the ceremony will be held. In 2015, VA honored more than 353,000 veterans and their loved ones with memorial benefits in national, state, tribal and private cemeteries.

A brief wreath-laying service will be held at the monuments at Sloan Park, but the full service will be in Butler Park by the monuments.
