Memorial Day events in the Fox Valley

Ellicott asked those in attendance to remember not only those who failed to make it home from overseas, but also those veterans who made it home but suffer from post traumatic stress disorder and have considered or committed suicide, as well as those veterans who are homeless.

Memorial Day services are planned at three Lincoln cemeteries and others around the area on Monday. Former Stow Police Chief Louis Dirker, who died this past February, was a member, he said. Guest speaker is Charles D. Peters Jr., commander, U.S. Navy Reserve.

The American Legion Post 15 honor guard was there to help with the ceremony. Also, following the Flag Burning Ceremony the Pawcatuck VFW will host a joint coalition for parade participants.

The Town of Monterey will have a band and flea market throughout the day at Whittaker Park.

Americans who fell in wartime were honored Sunday, at the annual Memorial Day service at Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Pensacola.

Capt. Dave Olds, 184th Intelligence Wing, will be conducting fly-overs with the “Jayhawk Wing” of the Commemorative Air Force based out of Wichita on Memorial Day.

“It is a reminder of something that people should do, which is honor those who fought for our country”. The parade continues down South Main Street to the free bridge. The presidential proclamation issued by President Barack Obama notes that 3 p.m. Monday is the designated time for all Americans to observe, in whatever way they choose, the National Moment of Remembrance.

The men of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 4265 will be hosting services at 11 a.m.at Craig Cemetery and 2 p.m.at Maybell Cemetery. Lunch, served by Legion Auxiliary, at Tabor Hall following services. “Most of us take it for granted”.

Grand Valley High School Marching Band, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownies, veterans and their families are invited to walk in the parade.

The ceremony hosted by the City of Laredo and American Legion Post 59 is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m.at the veterans section of the city cemetery.

St. Leon, Ind. – St. Joseph American Legion Post 464 will hold Memorial Day services on Monday, May 30 at 11 area cemeteries.

Many Americans will be visiting those cemeteries today, some honoring relatives, others honoring individuals they never knew, although the truth is, no military hero is a stranger, for while the face may be unfamiliar, the courage and sacrifice are not.

Capt. Kendrea Shingleton, brigade logistics officer, 130 Field Artillery Brigade, will be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day Ceremony at Veteran’s Park.

The parade steps off at 9 a.m., heading from Leslie O. Johnson Road, turning left onto Centennial Avenue, then left again onto Western Avenue to arrive at the World War II Memorial at McKinnon Triangle at Kent Circle.

The annual Memorial Day Parade will start at 10 a.m.at Second Avenue in the Haskell section of town and head north on Ringwood Avenue towards War Veterans Place. Refreshments served at Kewaunee Legion Building. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m.

The “Line of March” will be north on Main to the Civil War Monument, and return following services to the Village Park.

Two organizations – the Vietnam/Legacy Veterans Motorcycle Club and Daughters of the American Revolution – placed wreaths at the Wall South. Marines in dress blue uniforms rendered a 21-gun salute followed by a Marine bugler playing Taps.
