Memorial Day events planned for Tucson area

Please remember many city and county offices and businesses will be closed to honor the fallen this Memorial Day.

According to a township news release, the Guy R. Bosworth American Legion Post 140 will begin Memorial Day ceremonies at St. Stephen’s Cemetery at 9:15 a.m. and St. A musical tribute will showcase a variety of patriotic tunes sung by the Napa Valley Harmonizers, a local barbershop-style chorus. The Curry County Joint Veterans Council has organized a service at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens, while the Clovis Municipal Airport will host a fly-in. Taps will be performed to conclude the ceremony. The Veterans Home of California will be host to a series of observances throughout the holiday weekend.

Line up for parade participants is at 9:30 a.m.in the Napa Auto Parts parking lot at 709 E. Broadway St.

Memorial Day services in Kensal will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the school gym with American Legion 4th District Vice Cmdr.

The annual Memorial Day parade for West Pittston and Exeter will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Wyoming Avenue and Linden Street, West Pittston.

Stops at North Cohasset Cemetery, Woodside Cemetery, Beechwood Cemetery, the South Shore Music Circus, Joy Place Cemetery and POW/MIA Square. Organizers will honor Denise Ratterman Jackson, the author of two books detailing the Pioneer Cemetery’s history, and the ceremony will conclude with a traditional black-powder cannon volley. At about 1 p.m., there will be a dedication of additional names to the memorial plaque.

This day was a time for the U.S. to decorate the graves of those who died in war with flowers. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually. Memorial Day ceremony – in front of VFW Gunnery Sgt. Elia Fontecchio Post 10148 at 150 Minutemen Causeway.

In honor of this upcoming Memorial Day volunteers placed American flags at each grave inside the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.

And for American Legion Post 169 Commander Michael Kurtz, putting out the flags is a humbling experience. The St. Helena post has 186 members.

Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery will hold a ceremony at 8 a.m. At 8 a.m. the flag will be raised at Wood Memorial Park with a salute by the American Legion and Auxiliary.
