The 2016 Georgia 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will take place on Saturday, September 10 at The Manhattan in Dunwoody.
Each firefighter carried a special tag with the name of an individual firefighter, dedicating their climb to their memory.
“It’s an honour to be able to do the stair climb with them”.
The event raised over $50,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Association.
Tony Scott of the Auckland Airport Rescue Fire Service started the memorial climb following the 2009 cool store fire in Tamahere, Hamilton, where several Kiwi firefighters lost their lives. Each participant of the climb pays a personal tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center, symbolically completing their heroic journey to save others.
Misek, also a firefighter, says that it is important to remember the sacrifices the firefighters made on September 11, 2001.
“You know over the years, people stop doing things for 9-11”.
“Back home in NY right now on September 11 it’ll be a very solemn day in every fire house in the city, remembering the members who passed away and remembering their families”, San Filippo said.
