Memorial service for fallen Hayward sergeant at Oracle Arena
Scott Lunger, gunned down while on duty, through the city Thursday morning before proceeding to Oracle Arena in Oakland for his funeral.

The agency said that after the ceremony, at about 1 p.m., a procession of law enforcement officers will escort Lunger’s body from the Oracle Arena to his final resting place in Brentwood, so freeway, on-ramp, and roadway closures are expected along southbound I-880, southbound I-238, eastbound Interstate Highway 580 and Vasco Road, which connects Livermore and Brentwood.
Sergeant Lunger’s celebration of life services will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Oracle Arena. Lunger’s two daughters Saralyn and Ashton are asked to send them to: HPOA (Hayward Police Officers Association) C/O Family of Sgt. It will proceed west on A to Interstate 880, then north to the arena. Expect freeway, on-ramp, and roadway closures along I-880 S/B, I-238 S/B, I-580 E/B, and Vasco Road. Lunger are advised of the following details regarding the viewing, services and travel concerns: PUBLIC VIEWING The public viewing was held at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd, Hayward from 4 p.m.to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29.
“They know how much their dad is revered by this community and police department”, Urban said.
Darrell Rumple, one of the mourners at the Hayward funeral home, said he had personally met Lunger and considered him a good person.
“We’ve had tremendous support from the community”, Hayward police Lt. Eric Krimm said. “They’re all crushed”.
Family, friends, and law enforcement officers from across the county paid their respects to Lunger, a 15-year-veteran who was killed July 22. “So many people care”.
“Scott was a guy who really appreciated tradition and honor”, she said.
Lunger, a Brentwood resident, was 48. A backup officer returned fire, hitting the driver on his left side.

Lunger was fatally shot July 22 after stopping a motorist for driving erratically in a residential area. Mark Anthony Estrada, 21, was later arrested after being treated at a hospital. The district attorney has filed special circumstances murder charges against him.
