Memphis cornerback Reggis Ball removed from team
We’ve already mentioned how well the defense played in this game, and how a lot of that can be contributed to how Thompson prepared them heading into the Birmingham Bowl.

At least against teams like Memphis, Auburn doesn’t have to throw the football to win ball games.
It’s freakish, it’s odd but it’s also probably the most awesome thing that has happened in this bowl season before the bowl games actually count for something.
Auburn wasn’t supposed to win by a margin of 31-10 against Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Jeremy Johnson and Auburn found a measure of redemption and, finally, something to celebrate in their season finale.
Auburn wide receiver Marcus Davis (80) dodges Memphis defensive back Reggis Ball (39) during the Birmingham Bowl at Legion Field on Wednesday, Dec. 30, in Birmingham, Alabama. “In our minds, it was just about getting in the end zone”.
With former head coach Justin Fuente having left to take the Virginia Tech job, Darrell Dickey was tasked with coaching this game in the interim capacity. Lynch, who entered with 3,670 yards and a 28/3 TD/INT rate, was terrible, failing to lead the Tigers to even one TD (Memphis had a pick-six). He ran 17 yards on his second play from scrimmage and opened the fourth quarter with a five-yard touchdown run. That beforehand knowledge did Memphis no good, as Auburn pounded away all day to the tune of 252 yards and three touchdowns on 56 carries.
“I think my performance throughout the last part of the season was a testament to my work ethic during the summer and the spring”, Robinson said.
The Tigers from Tennessee were held to just 10 points, 206 yards of offense, and three yards per offensive play…a season-low in all categories for Memphis.
“It was a lot on us, but you’ve got to give Auburn credit”, Lynch said.
Selected the game MVP, Prescott completed 25 of 42 passes and ran for 47 yards to become the fourth player in FBS history to throw for 9,000 yards and run for 2,500 yards.
“He handled himself like a champ”, said coach Gus Malzahn. But what you didn’t see was perhaps the best con job of the college football season. White threw two interceptions, and Ball returned the second 53 yards for touchdown to tie it at 10 late in the first half.

White and Johnson shared playing time in the third and fourth quarter. Auburn outgained Memphis, 197-91, in the first half but the turnovers stunted its success.
