Federal officials will review the events surrounding the death of 19-year-old Darrius Stewart, who was shot and killed by a Memphis police officer in July.
Stewart was shot and fatally wounded by Memphis Police Department officer Connor Schilling in July after Schilling stopped a auto in which Stewart was a passenger.
Carlos Moore, an attorney for Stewart’s father, says he expects a release of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s file on the shooting Tuesday.
“The DOJ has been conducting an independent, comprehensive, and careful review of the evidence collected related to the shooting of Mr. Stewart”, U.S. Attorney Edward Stanton III of Memphis told a news conference.
Quinn added, “It corroborates Schilling’s version, that they were rolling around and tussling on the ground and the shots occurred as they were getting up”.
Schilling said he asked the three men for identification and dispatch reported that Stewart had arrest warrants out of IL for failure to appear in court and in Iowa where he was wanted on a sexual abuse charge in 2009 when he 13.
Several people said they saw Schilling shoot Stewart as Stewart was running away. The unusual move came after a grand jury declined to indict Schilling on charges of voluntary manslaughter and use of a weapon during the commission of a unsafe felony. It says one bullet entered Stewart’s upper right chest and traveled downward front to back.
The muzzle was likely between one-half inch and 3 to 4 feet from Stewart when the gun was sacked, the medical examiner told investigators.
Cohen said he hopes the federal probe may shed light on other cases of which he’s been made aware where questionable police force was alleged. Stewart charged Schilling and grabbed Schilling by the shoulders.

Stewart’s family claim the warrants were not for their 19-year-old son and that it was a case of mistaken identity. Enlarge Handout Officer Connor Schilling has been relieved of duty with pay, and faces an administrative hearing.
