Memphis police officer shot and killed during traffic stop

The name of the police officer is known, but WMC Action News 5 has retracted his name until his family is notified.

A Tennessee police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Memphis on Saturday, officials said.

He has not been identified pending notification of next of kin.

Bolton was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition, but was pronounced dead there.

“This is a very hard time, not only for me as director, but also for all the officers standing behind me and the city as a whole”, Memphis Police Toney Armstrong told reporters Saturday night. No further details were released.

The suspect is still at large, police said.

This follows the July 3, 2011, shooting Officer Timothy Warren in a downtown hotel. He said police are using all available resources to find the shooter. Sad to say, we’ve been here before. On December. 14, 2012, Officer Martoya Lang was shot and killed while serving a warrant.

“This speaks volumes about the inherent dangers of police work”, he said.

It is the third Memphis officer to be fatally shot in slightly more than four years.
