In a bowl matchup of the SEC and the AAC, the Auburn Tigers used a dominant defense to roll to a 31-10 win over the Memphis Tigers in Birmingham.
Johnson played nearly the entire fourth quarter when the game was in hand, but he was only asked to throw one pass … and it went for a touchdown.
A blocked field goal against Memphis, no missed kicks on its end and a couple of great punt returns made special teams another X-factor in this game that Auburn dominated. This year, it’s Memphis safety Reggis Ball running over to the Auburn sideline after the game to take a football from the equipment staff.
Sean White in the starting position did not have a particularly strong game, completing 8 of his 14 passes for 103 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. The one Memphis points in this one came on a pick-six by Reggis Ball & Jake Elliott’s 53-yard field goal.
Auburn outgained Memphis 402-205 in total yards in the first game since defensive coordinator Will Muschamp left to become South Carolina’s head coach. Lynch’s end-zone interception early in the third quarter was particularly egregious and sunk Memphis’ chances of winning the game.
He threw one pass the whole game. Could Auburn keep up with Paxton Lynch and outscore the high-powered Memphis offense?
Prediction: Auburn likely has the more superior athletes and is playing a team without a head coach.
Memphis will look to match the excitement of last year’s inaugural Miami Beach Bowl, a game against BYU the Tigers won 55-48 in double-overtime, and in which quarterback Paxton Lynch was responsible for seven touchdowns (four passing, three rushing), tying an NCAA bowl record. Auburn drilled a 20-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. USC, which fell 41-22 to Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship game on Dec 5, is favored by 3.5 points to lift the title again.
The Uptown Entertainment District played host to a big street party and pep rally for Auburn and Memphis fans.

Auburn didn’t have a good passing attack this season, that’s just the reality. Malzahn said he would announce his starter shortly before the game but indicated White’s injured knee is close to 100 percent healthy. Memphis is allowing just 3.4 yards a carry. Jovon Robinson paced Auburn with 124 yards and a score, while Peyton Barber added 41 yards.

Lynch opened the second half by throwing an interception in the end zone to Tray Matthews.
