A spokesman for Rother District Council said, despite there being no lifeguards, there were summer patrols to advise people of potential dangers.

In addition to the lifeguard service the RNLI will also be providing a Face-to-Face team who will be on hand to provide key safety information to all visitors at the beach.

Five men who drowned at a British beach were in their late teens and early 20s and from Greater London, police believe.

He and his friends, Kurushanth Srithavarajah (27), brothers, Kenigan and Kobi Nathan, aged 19 and 22, and Inthushan Sriskantharasa (23), who were all of Sri Lankan origin, had driven to Camber Sands from their homes in south-east London on Wednesday afternoon to take advantage of the fine weather.

“To date this has not identified the need for lifeguards to be deployed at the beach and there have never been lifeguards employed at this beach”.

It is believed Ken and Inthushan became trapped underwater after falling into a deep patch, before the other three tried to save their friends.

Steve Hudson, who has a beach hut nearby said: ‘We were out when it happened but we saw the search later.

The RNLI added: “The RNLI provides lifeguard cover on over 240 beaches throughout the UK”.

The victims were all from London, in their late teens and 20s and had visited the popular Sussex resort together on a day trip.

A year ago 168 people died in United Kingdom waters – 50% of the people who died did not expect to get wet when they got into trouble, Mr Macleod said.

The pair died along with three friends while playing in the sea on Wednesday – the hottest day of the year so far.

Media reports that the men may have got into trouble with jellyfish, or were “fully clothed” and may have been migrants, were both unfounded, a spokesperson for Sussex Police told The Independent.

A petition calling for permanent lifeguards at the beach has now got over 7,000 signatures.

He said: “Ken and Inthushan got stuck in water”.

RNLI senior lifeguard manager Steve Instance said: “We are expecting beaches across the south west to be very busy this bank holiday weekend as people make the most of the last few weeks of the school holidays”.
