The Zika virus is mainly transmitted through mosquitos, but this new case has health officials searching for answers.

The biggest concern is the impact it could have on pregnant women and the surge in microcephaly (of which symptoms include below-average head sizes).

The Zika virus usually results in mild symptoms, including fever, rash and fatigue that resolve in approximately one week.

There have now been 11 cases of Zika virus infection among NY residents.

Gov. Greg Abbott has set up a task force to help plot the spread of the virus and find ways to attack the bugs that carry it.

Planes landing at United Kingdom airports including nearby Luton from areas affected by Zika are to be sprayed with insecticide as part of the Government’s response to the outbreak.

According to Independent, there is great evidence of a link between Zika virus infection in pregnant woman and birth defects in their baby such as microcephaly, a condition that involves deformities in the brain of the baby. “Presence of virus in saliva doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily transmissible that way”.

Fiocruz, as the foundation is informally known, made the discovery after analyzing samples from two patients and carrying out a partial genome sequencing of the virus, said Paulo Gadelha, president of the foundation.

The guidance also suggests the men might consider abstaining or using condoms even with a partner who isn’t pregnant. In addition, the revised guidelines address testing for women who reside in areas where Zika is spreading.

Asked during a conference call with reporters how likely it might be that Zika could spread through saliva and urine, Frieden said “we just have no data to inform that”.

Latin America has been hit by an outbreak of Zika, a virus transmitted by mosquitos which now affects 23 countries in the region.

Mr Gadelha said pregnant women should be cautious of attending the country’s carnival celebrations, which begin in earnest this weekend, but said there was no reason for anyone else to stay away. Rarely, the virus may spread from mother to child around the time of birth. Four out of five people who become infected with Zika never feel sick.
