Mental illness is not, “taboo” at Shawnee Mental Health Center

This weekend the Government pledged £15 million funding to keep people with mental health problems out of police cells, while last month the Department of Health and Department for Education launched a new child mental health service.

“Much has been said at the national level to improve the disparity between mental and physical health, but this report highlights that the necessary investment is not reaching frontline NHS trusts”, she said. “With one in five adults likely to suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder in any given year, too many families are damaged, and we lose billions of dollars to lost productivity”.

What is mental illness?

In an effort to curb gun violence, the White House recently announced it would take steps to ensure that mental health records are submitted to the background check system.

Michelin’s program, run by Beacon Health Options, includes counselors in on-site health centers, a web-based therapy tool and telepsychiatry for workers in locations that have no access to mental health care providers. I’d rather somebody who tries to help rather than being scared away by the stigma of mental illness altogether, thinking that they can do nothing for me because it’s “all in my head”.

She said mental illness continues to be plagued by a stigma and is considered, “taboo”.

The former surgeon general notes that there are social determinants of mental health as there are social determinants of general health that need to be in place to support mental health. However, this is not a justification for letting commissioners, both local and national, off the hook for investing in mental health services, not least because they are required to do this. It’s time to stop the stereotyping. The exact causes of mental illnesses are still unclear, but can be attributed to a variety of biological and environmental factors.
