Mercedes-AMG Preparing F1-Powered Hybrid Hypercar

To celebrate the milestone Mercedes-AMG will introduce a brand new hypercar which will be powered by a modified version of Mercedes-AMG’s Formula 1 racing engine. The end goal is set to be a power-to-weight ratio of 1:1, which could easily be achieved since F1’s strict set of regulations would no longer apply. Well, 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of AMG; combine that with the stellar season Mercedes has been having in Formula One, and showing off the company’s technical prowess with a full-blown supercar starts to seem, well, nearly logical. The engine’s displacement might be raised to 2.0 liters in the name of driveability and reliability, and it could gain a second turbocharger. Regardless, insiders claim the V6 will generate at least 900 horsepower.

Electrification will also play a part in the hypercar’s performance package, with with a pair of front axle electric motors boosting performance to the tune of around 120kW, while helping to stabilise handling. All told, the hybrid drivetrain will serve up anywhere between 1,000 and 1,500 horsepower. Rear-wheel steering and torque vectoring will help drivers make the most of the car’s astonishing power. Engineers are allegedly targeting a zero-to-60 miles per hour time of about 2.5 seconds, and a top speed of roughly 220 miles per hour, though tire technology will largely determine the final figures. It’s expected to weigh between 2,200 and 2,900 pounds thanks to the use of lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber.

Why will the Mercedes hypercar reportedly be arriving so quickly? Production will be strictly limited to just 50 examples, and each one will cost approximately €4 million (roughly $4.5 million) before options are factored in. Both reports appear to come from the Belgian Grand Prix; it’s possible both TG and evo spoke with the same ill-informed or overly presumptuous AMG staffer, who let loose a rumor sure to set the Internet aflame.
