Mercedes shows off C-Class Cabriolet at New York International Auto Show

On the outside, customary AMG body styling items are apparent, notably featuring an AMG “A-wing” front splitter, more aggressive bumpers, twin-bar radiator grille and quad exhaust tips.

Wheels are 18-inch front and rear on the C63 Cabriolet (with 255/40 and 285/35 tyres) and 19-inch front and rear (255/35 and 285/30) on the S. 19- and 20-inch wheels are optionally available.

The cabriolet’s boot measures 355 litres with the roof up and 260 with it folded, a decrease on its coupe and sedan counterparts.

Depending on market, buyers can pick from four colours for the roof: black, dark brown, dark blue or dark red. This Teutonic droptop features a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 under its long hood. The standard C 63 cabrio delivers 476 hp and 650 Nm, and is capable of performing the century sprint in 4.2 seconds.

Standard fit items include AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive damping (and Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes that pair the stiffness of the suspension to the steering, engine and transmission response), and there’s a limited slip differential on the C63 S, and dynamic engine mounts.

It’s still enough for 0-62 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds, with room for five inside the cosseting cabin.

Cog changing chores in the C63 and C63 S are handled by a paddle-shift 7-speed AMG Speedshift MCT sport automatic transmission with AMG Dynamic Select Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, and in the case of the C63 S, Race modes.

Setting both models apart from the standard C-Class Cabriolet are the flared wheel arches, the wide track and the large wheels which add to the convertible model’s powerful look, though it’s overall performance that impresses the most when it comes to AMG-badged cars. The C63 comes with a mechanical limited-slip diff while the S gets an electronically controlled unit that is said to provide “even more sensitive and faster control”.
