Mercedes SL to debut in LA

Now for 2016 Mercedes-Benz has a twist as they are introducing the new 2016 C450 AMG Sports auto.

If you’re confused about exactly what it is, the idea here according to Benz is, a sporty sedan offering performance between the C400 4Matic, the auto that 450 replaces, and the mighty C63.

The current model is still available from £73,575.

What changes are in store for the SL-Class come LA? It will also get thinner taillights and redesigned exhaust pipes. But bear with us here because this in itself is a major improvement. Ditto in the ’60s, when the Pagoda’s ovoid bezels connected it to everything from the 200-series cars to its world-beating 600 Grosser.

Manoeuvring isn’t the simplest matter, though, as you can’t see any of the corners and that longer conk means it’s easy to end up poking out at junctions like Pinocchio was sat on the bonnet. Launched in early 2012 and designed before current chief designer Gorden Wagener took over from his predecessor Peter Pfeiffer, the two-seater adopted a somewhat misshapen, droopy look that appeared as if it was designed by several committees who refused to communicate with each other. The updated model will make its global debut at the show, sporting a refreshed front fascia. The updated bumper now features four inlets: one on each side and a double-decker one in the center.

Not much else is known about the SL though there aren’t many changes likely to be introduced elsewhere either. Still, a new face could be all the vehicle needs to get back to the front of its class. After all, it’s hard to argue with 577 horsepower and 577 pound-feet of torque in SL63 trim – that’s nothing to sneeze at.
