The GLC becomes the sixth SUV in the company’s portfolio in India, which ranges from the GLA to the AMG G63 which are priced in the range of Rs 31 lakh and Rs 2 crore, respectively.

The GLC is Mercedes-Benz’s key product that never had a predecessor in India, positioning itself between the GLA and GLE luxury SUVs.

The GLC is an SUV based on Mercedes’ popular C-Class sedan and as a result, shares a lot of its construction bits and design cues with it. The GLC is introduced as a CBU and will be available in both petrol and diesel variants.

Talking about safety features, the Mercedes GLC comes loaded with parking assist, attention assist, adaptive brake lights, tyre-pressure monitoring system and even 7 airbags.

The seats themselves are covered in fabric instead of leather, while Mercedes also replaced the carpet with rubber mats, underneath which you’ll find drains to easily clean the floor. The petrol unit develops 245hp and 370Nm of torque while the diesel produces 170hp and 400Nm. Both the engines are mated to an all-new 9-speed GTronic automatic gearbox. It comes with a raised suspension of 20 mm, and offers three off-road driving modes: Off-road, Incline, Slippery, and Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) included as standard. The company explains that the new SUV is completely domestic in nature for the customers.

Speaking with the website previous year, the company’s research and development boss, Dr Thomas Webber, said: “The SUV segment is one of the most important because it is clear there is global demand”.

Mercedes has stripped away some of the luxury trimmings on its long-serving G-Wagen to create the G350d Professional.

The GLC is pitted against the likes of Audi Q5 and the BMW X3 in India.
