Meredith McIver, Trump speechwriter, takes blame for cribbing Obama remarks

Trump entered the arena at the end of Cruz’s speech, causing the cameras to cut away from the Texas senator as he concluded.

Cruz’s appearance at the Cleveland convention had been the subject of intense anticipation over his attitude towards Trump, after their intensely personal exchanges in the late stages of the primary race.

The divide has spilled over into the convention, which has been dominated by a thwarted attempt to block Trump’s nomination and as well as Mrs. Trump’s speech.

It was a woman, and the Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

A speechwriter for Donald Trump’s company said Wednesday she made a mistake and apologized for using passages from a 2008 Michelle Obama speech in the Republican party convention speech delivered by Melania Trump.

Campaign officials see Pence’s address as an important opportunity to reassure the doubters.

Trump’s message has resonated with those who want to shut down immigration and who believe immigrants are stealing U.S.jobs and are causing crime to skyrocket. “That way, we have a Republican ticket to implement Republican principles in Washington”, said the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives. Cruz, runner-up to Trump in the bruising nomination battle, is expected to shelve past references to Trump such as “pathological liar” and “utterly amoral”. Cruz’s wife, Heidi Cruz, was heckled by Trump supporters shouting “Goldman Sachs!” and escorted out by security.

Not that Trump didn’t match Cruz’s scorn.

Some Republicans thought it was an unnecessary distraction at a time when the party should be focussed on selling itself and its new leader to Americans. While Clinton has been a target of GOP ire for decades, the harshness of the attacks was still striking.

Perhaps the wildest attack on Tuesday came from former GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson, who told the crowd that one of Clinton’s “role models” – community activist Saul Alinsky – “acknowledges Lucifer” in a 1971 book. Joni Ernst, who was lukewarm to the idea and dropped off the list; Chris Christie; Mike Pence; Newt Gingrich; and Sen. And for a third straight night, the crowd filling the convention hall Wednesday chanted, “Lock her up”.

For at least some delegates, the negativity crossed a line. Bob Corker of Tennessee.

“Last August, I said that any of the Republicans running would be better than Hillary Clinton”.

Trump has shown little concern for maintaining any modicum of political decorum.

The Trump campaign did not respond to requests for comment. Pence and his family, along with Trump’s adult children, greeted the billionaire as his helicopter landed by Cleveland’s picturesque lakefront. Can Trump sell himself as a unifying force, or will he return to the us-versus-them mentality that’s been a hallmark of his campaign?

The rebranding effort continues on Day 3. I did not check Mrs. Obama’s speeches. In her statement, McIver said that upon hearing from Melania that she liked Michelle Obama, McIver inserted some of Obama’s words into a speech and did not take them out.

According to the statement, McIver offered her resignation to Donald Trump and his family on Tuesday.
