Critics of Gabriel’s comments have also pointed out that while members of the SPD are skeptical about the TTIP, the German Government remains strongly supportive of the proposed agreement, with Chancellor Angela Merkel having publicly backed the negotiations recently.
He believes the agreements that are endlessly negotiated in secret, end up helping large businesses. “Nothing is moving forward”, he said.
Gabriel’s ministry isn’t directly involved in the negotiations with Washington because trade agreements are negotiated at the European Union level.
“The talks with the USA have de facto failed because we Europeans of course must not succumb to American demands”, he told public broadcaster ZDF.
Another motivation “was just to try to boost economic growth in Europe, which has been pretty sluggish coming out of the great recession”, he says.
The deal still has backing in some quarters, however, with a number of European Union officials speaking out in support of it. Italy’s Economic Development Minister Carlo Calenda said in an interview with Corriere della Sera that talks will require many more months.
