Current indications from the German side are that much will depend on how easy India can make it for them to do business in the country.
PM Narendra Modi greeted Chancellor Merkel at Hyderabad House and began talks with her to bring Delhi and Germany closer.
Germany is now India’s largest business partner in the European Union and the sixth-largest in the world.
Angela Merkel’s trip to India didn’t exactly start off as planned.
The joint statement issued by Modi and Merkel said both the countries will continue to intensify their cooperation in developing climate-friendly and sustainable solutions for India’s expanding energy needs.
Economic relations are of utmost importance. The German Chancellor also returned a 10th century made idol of Goddess Durga in Mahishasuramardani avatar which was stolen about 20 years ago from a temple situated in Jammu and Kashmir to Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on October 5, 2015.
The pacts signed included joint declaration of intent between HRD ministry and the federal foreign office of Germany regarding the promotion of German as a foreign language in India and the promotion of modern Indian languages in Germany.
These include agreements to introduce fast-track measures to facilitate investment in the country by German companies, and to cooperate on solar energy projects. India and Germany should work for closer integration of their economies and greater political understanding.
Modi also welcomed Germany’s support for India’s membership bid at the Multilateral Export Control Regime, and pledged closer cooperation in defense and counter-terrorism, noting that both countries will support the reforms of the UN Security Council.
“She has led the continent’s biggest humanitarian response to the refugee crisis spilling out of the war-torn world, from Syria to Sudan, Libya to Iraq”, said a reporter at the press conference. We will conclude substantial agreements that enable us to further complement our respective strengths.
