Merry Moon: Rare full moon on Christmas Day
So tonight and tomorrow, why don’t you turn it all off, go outside and take a long look at the first full moon on Christmas Day in 40 years (in other words, 1977). But if you don’t think you’ll be up at 6 a.m., at sunset on Christmas Eve the moon should be visible rising in the east and peaking high in the south close to midnight.

A full moon on Christmas won’t happen again until 2034, almost two decades from now, NASA said. Some locals paused Christmas Eve celebrations to gaze at the sky and post about the moon on social media.
NASA has a spacecraft now orbiting the Earth’s moon. “The geologic history of the moon and Earth are intimately tied together such that the Earth would be a dramatically different planet without the moon”.
The full moon photo above comes from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been circling the moon and sending back data and images of the lunar surface since 2009. It is rising just about now in the Pacific time zone and peaks about 3 am PT. For those in Boston, the Full Cold Moon is expected to rise a few minutes earlier while a 20-minute difference could be expected by those in Atlanta. According to NBC News, the year 1977 was also the same time Hans Solo and Chewbacca fought Stormtroopers.

Though Vancouverites may still get a chance to see the moon when they wake up on Christmas morning, as Environment Canada is calling for clear skies and sunshine on Friday.
