Bauza had met several of the Argentina squad in Barcelona recently, including Messi and Javier Mascherano, and left those meetings confident that the 29-year-old would return to worldwide duty in the near future.

Lionel Messi is returning to the Argentina national team, having initially announced his retirement following defeat in the Copa America final.

However, he remains confident that Messi will change his mind.

“The national team is over for me”, Messi told the Argentinian network TyC Sports then. It was a good chat.

Argentina have suffered a string of disappointing losses in big tournaments with Messi, including the World Cup final in 2014. That makes his retirement, well, not so much of a retirement, which surely makes Argentina and the rest of the world happy.

“I don’t know if he will be on the list”.

Messi is considered by most the best soccer player in the world, and at age 29 still should have many good years in front of him.

“Let’s see with Dybala”. I respect him a lot, I’m an Argentine but I also know he’s dedicated to something else. “Once we have all the players in Buenos Aires, we will build the team”.

“It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn’t get it so I think it’s over”.

Bauza responded, saying: “I respect Maradona’s words”.

He boarded a flight to Spain on Monday night on a mission to persuade Messi to rethink his decision to quit the national team.

He might look rusty after all that time away from his compatriots-though a cursory glance at the global fixtures list appears to show that he didn’t actually miss out on a single game with the Albiceleste, which must be wrong-but we’re sure that this older yet in some ways newer Messi will recapture the glory of his halcyon days in no time.
