Mest Insider: David Wright eyes next weekend for return

Not a bad start.

On Thursday, David Wright continued his rehab assignment and outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis joined St. Lucie to start a rehab assignment. He subsequently has been sidelined by spinal stenosis in his lower back.

Wright finished 1-for-3 with a single and a walk. His outs were routine – a fly to center and a pop to second – in an 8-4 loss to Fort Myers in the Florida State League.

“I don’t think it’s too serious”, Duda said. He served as the DH in Monday’s game and expects to play five innings at third base on Tuesday. A rest day is planned for Wednesday.

Terry Collins squashed any notion that David Wright could be the designated hitter when the Mets begin a two-game series against the Orioles in Baltimore next Tuesday. If all goes well, he would be activated from the disabled list Saturday. But before he could come back, he was diagnosed with the back issue.

Considering how well the Mets are playing of late-winning six straight and nine of the last eleven-having David Wright back in the lineup as soon as possible will surely increase the Mets’ chances of making a run for the postseason.

Wright feels he’s done everything he can short of getting into live-game action. “It will be a good test for me tomorrow”. “That’s the way I’m going to decide who plays”.

A lot will depend on how healthy Wright is when eligible to play, but even so, all signs are pointing to a quick return for the Mets captain.

Wright said that in between at-bats on Monday, he went into the clubhouse at Tradition Field and sneaked some peeks at how the NL East-leading Mets were doing at Citi Field against Colorado.
