Jon Fraser from Worcestershire County Council Highways said: “It will remain clear and be getting colder this evening when the road temperatures could fall to as low as -2°C”.

A Met Office spokeswoman said: “We have warnings out in Scotland for some snow in the west and ice in the south, as well as in Northern Ireland, south-west England and into Wales”.

It comes as Public Health England issued a level 3 warning for cold weather across the city, meaning temperatures are set to drop below 2C, and heavy snow and ice is forecast.

Covering Swansea, people are being urged by the Met Office to be aware of the likelihood of snow and ice.

Snow: Motorists warned to take extra care on roads. Overnight, it will be less cold in the west, but severe frost is predicted in the east. Most of the snow is expected to fall across Wales, but smaller amounts may feed down into some western parts of England. From 8pm showers of rain, sleet and snow are likely, giving further accumulations by 6am of up to 3cm at low levels, 6cm at altitudes of above 100m and up to 10cm above 250m, before clearing by 7am.

The frost will become widespread quickly after dusk and Saturday night will be very cold and frosty again with air minima of zero to minus 6 degrees.

Met Office chief operational meteorologist Dan Suri said: “Particularly at risk of icy patches are roads, pavements and cycleways which are either still snow covered, where surfaces are wet from partially-melted snow or standing water, and areas where wintry showers occur after dark”.

“Please be aware of the potential for some travel disruption and hard driving conditions”, it advised people.
