Scotland, England and Wales have all seen snowfall, however forecasters said the risk of further snow was expected to lessen during Saturday.

“This cold snap is probably not going to last too long, but obviously it’s late November – it’s not like it’s going to become tropical”, Hogan said.

Gusts of up to 60mph are expected from about 9pm tonight with the Met Office warning in force until 3pm tomorrow afternoon.

“There is a possibility of temporary, small amounts of settling snow even at low levels away from eastern coastal counties of England, though most areas should miss this”. Ice will be an additional hazard.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning in the early hours of this morning, forecasting gale force winds and the chance of snow throughout today across the Bath area.

A flurry of snow fell across parts of the United Kingdom overnight as Britain prepares for a wintry weekend which could see temperatures plunge to minus 5C.

“Showers may give snow on mountains, with an overnight frost in quieter spells where skies clear”.

Surrey last experienced snow back in February.

Weekend temperatures are set to be below average for this time of year, with southern parts struggling to reach 6C and parts of Scotland barely managing to rise above freezing.

The A169 between Whitby and Pickering is to be closed due to risky weather conditions, North Yorkshire Police said.

“This weekend has been on the cards for a while”, he said.

The likelihood of sufficient snow for sledging and snowmen is limited, however.
