People across the western United States saw mysterious lights streak across the sky late Wednesday night and lit up social media with videos.

From witness accounts, the glowing trail was spotted in Nevada, Utah and across California – and perhaps elsewhere.

A spokesman for US Strategic Command said it would not provide details until later.

The truth, it seems, is that the objects were debris from a Chinese Chang Zheng 7 rocket launched on June 25.

Nellis Air Force Base officials said it was a meteor that was seen breaking up over the Las Vegas skies and beyond around 9:45 p.m.

Videos and photos from across Southern California poured into NBCLA’s Twitter feed after the light went streaking across the sky.

Dr. Ed Krupp, the director of the Griffith Observatory, told ABC7 the light was part of the Delta Aquarids Meteor shower which is expected to peak tonight and Thursday night.
