Methuen’s Niang shines in Summer League opener

He’s spent the past two seasons playing for the Oklahoma City Blue in the D-League. Horton was announced Friday as part of the Heat’s roster for the NBA Summer League in Orlando and Las Vegas. 7-foot-6 center Mamadou Ndiaye of UC Irvine posted 12 points and 7 rebounds per game last year as the tallest player in Divison I, and he went undrafted after leaving school a year early.

Other players to watch are Justice Winslow (Miami), Stanley Johnson and Henry Ellenson (Detroit), Brice Johnson and Diamond Stone (Clippers), Ryan Anderson and Alex Poythress (Orlando), Aaron Harrison and Deshaun Thomas (Charlotte), Glenn Robinson and Joe Young (Indiana).

Johnson was a second-round pick of the Thunder in 2015.

The NBA Summer League starts up today, and there are plenty of former Wildcats making the rosters for various teams. The 6-8, 250-pound forward led Colorado State in both scoring and rebounding, becoming the 23rd player in program history to eclipse 1,000-career points, doing so in just two seasons after transferring to CSU. Horton is listed to play in both leagues.

The NBA summer leagues are an important time of the year for professional players to either earn a free-agent contract, solidify their spot on an NBA roster, or develop and earn additional playing time for the NBA regular season. He had an assist and a steal. Poythress will play for one of the two Orlando Magic teams, Orlando Magic Blue. The Suns begin action against the Portland Trail Blazers July 9 at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas.

The Lakers’ Summer League team will hold its first practice on Tuesday, July 5 at the Toyota Sports Center, and the team will also officially introduce Zubac and Ingram as Lakers on the same day, at the same location.

The games in Orlando and Utah will be available on NBA-TV while ESPN will present all 67 games from Las Vegas across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU and WatchESPN.
