Metro riders are encouraged to seek alternate transportation until the accident has been cleared. Requa said that the derailment, which affected three railcars, was “minor from the standpoint of damage, but [is] a major disruption” for the Metro system.

Metro riders should gear up for a tough morning commute after a Metro train with no passengers aboard derailed at the Smithsonian station Thursday morning.
Stessel says there were no injuries; only the operator of the train was on board.

Silver Line trains are only running between Wiehle-Reston East and East Falls Church to prevent further congestion, according to the release.
The Smithsonian and Federal Triangle stations are closed.
Train service is now suspended between Federal Center and McPherson Square. Riders should transfer to the Orange Line to continue their trips.
