Metroid Fan Project Gets Hit With A DMCA Claim

Nintendo celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Metroid series in a weird way- by not even mentioning it.

Simply put, long-time Metroid fans can expect a level of polish that was seen in the GBA remake of Metroid, Metroid: Zero Mission.

AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) as the project is known, is basically a new game, but also a sequel of sorts to fan-favourite GameBoy Advance title Metroid: Zero Mission.

But as we all know, the rights of fan remakes are often dodgy, and Nintendo has filed a DMCA takedown notice on the website hosting the game.

However, while Nintendo might have seemingly forgot about the game’s protagonist Samus Aran, a group of fans certainly haven’t, and released a fan-made project to pay to tribute to the bounty hunter and her 30 years job. Project AM2R does just that, adding in new features like a map system, updated enemy AI, minibosses, new areas, completely redrawn sprites, a high-quality soundtrack, and more. It’s everything that we could have hoped for in a Metroid II remake. It sees you exploring an alien world trying to tag all different kinds of Metroid bounties with the aid of new weapons, armor, and abilities, and was superior to the original in nearly every way (greyscale graphics or not). The next game in the franchises is the upcoming Metroid Prime: Federation Force on 3DS, which has received so much dislike from the gaming community that Reggie Fils-Aime had to publicly address the hate at E3 a year ago.

Ars has given the game a preliminary spin and can report that this remake looks phenomenal, boasting a classic resolution of 320×240 pixels and yet still looking modern and fetching thanks to 60 frames-per-second animation of handsome, easily discernible sprites.
