Mets ace Noah Syndergaard exits start with elbow flare up

Syndergaard had departed a start against the Kansas City Royals earlier Wednesday after complaining of discomfort in the back of his pitching elbow. Cespedes received a cortisone injection that should sideline him for a couple of days, but he is expected to avoid the disabled list.

Daniel Hudson earned his first save of the season. But that 4-3 victory over October and November nemesis Kansas City was overshadowed by more bad medical news for the Mets.

Fear was the word of the day among Mets fans Wednesday after a slew of vital players made unexpected visits to doctors. He leads the club offensively with 2.2 Fangraphs WAR, placing him 12th in the majors among outfielders.

Cheslor Cuthbert homered for the Royals, who had won eight of nine when they arrived at Citi Field.

Yoenis Cespedes hit his 18th home run and Asdrubal Cabrera also homered for NY. The only bad news for banged-up NY was another injury, this one to Yoenis Cespedes. Kendrys Morales just missed a 3 run home run in the 5th. After throwing 41 pitches Sunday, he threw 65 over 3 2/3 effective innings and struck out six.

The Mets’ spectacular young starting pitchers get all the attention – and it is certainly well-deserved – but it is the 43-year old arm of Bartolo Colon that is as key as any of other starters to whether they return to the postseason.

Diamondbacks 4, Blue Jays 2: Yasmany Tomas and Peter O’Brien homered, and Patrick Corbin threw 61/3 solid innings to help Arizona get its fifth straight victory.

The Mets’ two-game series with the Royals in a World Series rematch was not kind to NY.

Duffy issued a walk to Mets right fielder Curtis Granderson, then missed on a 1-2 fastball to Asdrubal Cabrera. I don’t really know when it happened.

Whit Merrifield and Paulo Orlando each had an RBI single for the Royals.

Jerry Blevins pitched a scoreless seventh inning, extending his streak without allowing a run to 21 appearances.

NY pulled out the win Wednesday, but health is the Mets’ biggest opponent this season.

Ty Kelly might have gotten the start over Reynolds, but Kelly had been demoted pregame to allow the Mets to add right-hander Logan Verrett from Triple-A Las Vegas. The latest NL voting released Wednesday had Molina with a slight lead over San Francisco’s Buster Posey while the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist, Kris Bryant and Addison Russell continued to lead at their infield positions.
