Mets end 8-game win streak with 9-3 loss to Miami Marlins

Third baseman David Wright laced a tie-breaking ground-rule RBI double with two outs in the seventh inning as the New York Mets produced another comeback win by beating the Miami Marlins 4-3 at Citi Field on Monday.

With their season-high eighth straight win, the Mets increased their lead in the National League East to 10 games while reducing the magic number for clinching the division to 10.

“It’s just nice to be in a lineup where it’s not just one or two or three guys that you have to rely on to get the job done (and) if they don’t, it’s almost like a punch in the gut”, Wright said. “September baseball. It’s been a while since I’ve experienced coming in here and flipping on the TV to different games and celebrating wins like that”.

Pitching with family and friends on hand from his suburban New York hometown, Koehler gave up a run in the first inning but no more after the Mets loaded the bases with one out.

But manager Terry Collins said “perception’s reality and perception is he might be getting exhausted. It’s nice to have him back”.

When Cespedes arrived he immediately made an impact, with days such as his three-homer game. “But I’ll take our “Yeli” at the plate”. That was certainly the case in Detroit this season (Cespedes slugged.623 of pitches located down the middle or inside), and has been the case since he broke into the majors in 2012 (.573).

Hansel Robles (4-2) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. Jeurys Famila was ideal in the ninth for his 41st save in 46 opportunities.

“There was definitely a lot of adrenaline”.

Harper has had quite the season; there is no denying it. But if the voters’ decision comes down to whether or not they want their MVP vote to go to a player that is going to be playing in October, Cespedes could make history in multiple ways this fall.

“Right there, to d’Arnaud, I wanted that pitch back so bad”, said Nicolino, who allowed three runs over six innings.

Miami took a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth with two-out RBI singles by Derek Dietrich and J.T. Realmuto off of reliever Sean Gilmartin. New York might skip his next turn in the rotation to give him a rest.

Cespedes didn’t slide on a force play at second and appeared to step on the foot of shortstop Miguel Rojas. “Saturday Night Live” cast member Pete Davidson, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Marlins OF Christian Yelich, donned a Yelich jersey and mimicked OF Ichiro Suzuki’s warmup before taking a few swings during batting practice. “To go get three punchouts in that situation was huge”. RHP Carter Capps (strained right elbow) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Friday in Washington. Koehler has accumulated a 9-13 record with an ERA hovering around four over 27 starts. It was just the second time he has not been in the starting lineup since being acquired by New York on July 31….

Koehler (10-13) allowed one run on five hits and four walks while striking out four for the Marlins (62-83), who are 9-4 this month, including 3-2 against the first-place Mets. The rookie is 3-0 on the road with a 0.87 ERA but hasn’t faced the Mets yet.
