Mets fall to Marlins, drop 2 games back in wild card chase

Jay Bruce, mired in a horrendous slump and routinely booed when he comes to the plate, slammed his 28th home run in the sixth, a solo shot to center that drew the Mets to within 3-1. After a pair of strikeouts in the first inning, Esch allowed four consecutive baserunners in the second, including Wilmer Flores’ 15th home run.

NEW YORK (AP) – Even when things are starting to fall into place for the surging New York Mets, another impactful injury casted a dark cloud over what should have been a jubilant clubhouse following one of the biggest wins of the year.

“Everything’s fine”, the shaggy-haired ace insisted Thursday night following New York’s 6-4 loss to Miami.

The outing marked deGrom’s first start in eight days as the team gave him three extra days of rest to combat possible fatigue. They have been banged up lately and “I don’t need them slipping on the turf”, Collins said. “I just wanted to talk to Ray”, he said.

When the team around him started to crumble – stumbling through a bad August capped by a five-game losing streak, rapidly losing ground in the National League wild-card race in the process – Yelich did it all to stop it all.

DeGrom got seven days between starts because the Mets anxious he was worn out, but he still struggled. When you walk four guys, he was behind the count and threw a lot of pitches in five innings.

Pressed on what “didn’t feel great” meant, deGrom added: “Just kind of out of sync out there”. I’m proud of him.

I’ve got to figure that out”, said deGrom, who claimed he felt “just kind of out of sync out there.

Manager Terry Collins was caught unaware during his postgame interview when told that deGrom had called for the trainer, but pledged to investigate.

Johnson saw nearly every pitch in Ramos’ arsenal as the count started 2-0 before maxing out. That’s just not Jake.

DeGrom’s command issues are a big concern to the Mets, however, what’s behind those issues is a question which won’t go away until he’s shown they’re no longer worth discussing.

On Thursday, Yelich in his new role homered for the third straight day as the Marlins ended a five-game losing streak with a desperately needed 6-2 victory over the New York Mets. He went 2-for-4 for the second straight game and drove in two runs. Yelich also walked once, stole a base and made a diving catch on a bases-loaded line drive by deGrom to end the second.

RHP Jacob deGrom (7-7, 2.96 ERA) pitches the series finale against RHP Jose Urena (2-5, 5.83 ERA) opposes deGrom.

The Mets originally announced they were skipping a start for deGrom after he yielded 25 hits and 13 earned runs in 9 2/3 innings over two starts. Bruce, who came into the game batting.183 since joining the Mets, tacked on an RBI single in the eighth. The Mets had the bases loaded before Michael Conforto grounded into a double play while Yoenis Cespedes struck out.

Kelly Johnson delivered a tiebreaking three-run double with two outs in the eighth against A.J. DeGrom hit a liner up the middle that Yelich, playing shallow for the pitch, rushed in to grab off the grass.

– With a 9-6 win over the Padres for a three-game sweep, the Braves have now scored at least seven runs in five consecutive home games for the first time since August 7-10, 1953. Fernando Salas, acquired last night at the trading deadline from the Angels, pitched one inning, giving up a hit and striking out one.

Christian Yelich turned in quite an all-around performance that the Miami Marlins hope will help them turn the calendar on an bad August.
