New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has cancer and will undergo chemotherapy, the team announced Friday.

The type of cancer was not disclosed. Some obviously rotten news for the Mets’ head man, although the Mets say the cancer is treatable.

“Surgery was performed at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NY and as a result of that procedure, the doctors confirmed that Sandy has cancer”, Wilpon said, via Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.

At a news conference on November 4 where it was announced that Mets manager Terry Collins had gotten a contract extension, Alderson collapsed.

Alderson, who is 68, will not attend baseball’s annual Winter Meetings next week in Nashville, Tenn. He is expected to continue his duties as general manager as he enters his sixth season with the Mets.

The team has two former GMs in its front office, in special assistant J.P. Ricciardi (Blue Jays) and assistant general manager Paul DePodesta (Dodgers).

Earlier this week, Alderson was named Major League Executive of the Year by Baseball America. The Mets finished the season 90-72 and reached the World Series, where they lost to the Royals, four games to one.
