Mets get 13th straight win over Reds, 5-3 on Cespedes’ HR

Wednesday’s starter for the Mets – right-hander Noah Syndergaard – is 2-0 with a 2.42 ERA in three starts against Cincinnati. “I knew a lot of the veterans were getting a day off today”, Colon said through a translator. It’s Cincinnati’s longest-ever against the Mets and the Reds’ longest against any team since dropping 16 straight to the Arizona Diamondbacks from May 8, 2001 to August 13, 2003.

NY (74-66) entered play on Wednesday trailing the St. Louis Cardinals by one game for the second wild-card spot in the National League.

Flores’s homer was the first of his career as a pinch hitter and gave the Mets 12 this season, tying the franchise record set in 1983. They tried some aggressive base running against Syndergaard, trying to steal 3 times, but fell flat each time and ultimately helping him get out of his own jam. Ynoa loaded the bases with no one out, forcing Mets’ manager Terry Collins to go to Addison Reed in a 5-0 game.

The homer was the team’s third of the night, and the first four runs all scored on round-trippers. In the third, Peraza was thrown out at home.

This was also the first game Jay Bruce was playing against his former team.

Peraza doubled twice, singled twice and drove in two runs.

The Mets (74-66) finished off a three-game sweep and have won eight of 10.

Syndergaard (13-8) gave up six hits and four walks in five innings. They began the day one game behind St. Louis for the second NL wild-card slot.

Jonathan Villar hit two home runs and Keon Broxton robbed Anthony Rizzo of a homer in the ninth as host Milwaukee beat Chicago. Curtis Granderson hit one to right-center for a 1-0 lead in the second, and Jose Reyes led off the third with one that stayed fair down the left-field line to make it a 2-0 game. They have tomorrow night off and on Friday right-handed pitcher Robert Gsellman (2-1) is scheduled to start Friday in Atlanta.

With such a short turnaround until Monday’s first pitch, it prevented the Mets from being at full strength. Familia worked around a leadoff single to retire the side in the ninth to pick up his 47th save of the season and secure the Mets’ fifth win in a row.

“I hit the ball really good, but I didn’t know if it was going to go out, so I ran”, Peraza, who also had a bunt single, said through the Reds’ interpreter. A run scored when Josh Edgin allowed a sacrifice fly to Joey Votto to give Cincinnati a 3-2 lead, its first of the series. DeSclafani has had a strong year thus far, going 8-2 in 16 starts with a 1.14 WHIP and 2.93 ERA. He’s 0-2 with a 12.27 ERA in three starts against NY, two of which came while a member of the Miami Marlins.

It will be his fourth career appearance and third start vs the Mets who’ve hit him hard.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Right-hander Jharel Cotton allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings in his major-league debut, leading Oakland past Los Angeles.
