Mets’ Harvey to have season-ending surgery for TOS

The surgery will address thoracic outlet syndrome, and the hope is that Harvey will be ready for the start of the 2017 season. The right-hander didn’t complain of any pain after Monday’s outing against the Miami Marlins, but he did allow six runs (five earned) on 11 hits over just 3 2/3 innings.

There is good news for the team and Harvey, though.

The former ace was seen by Mets doctors, referred to Thompson for further examination and placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, retroactive to Tuesday. I said, ‘Man, when do you think this is going to stop?’ Can things possibly get worse?

Harvey’s injury involves a constriction of the opening in which nerves and blood vessels pass between the neck and shoulder.

An All Star in 2013, Harvey missed the 2014 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He struck out just 76 batters in 92.2 innings and struggled with his command and velocity throughout much of the year.

It was a stunning flop for a pitcher who began the year 25-18 with a 2.53 ERA and 449 strikeouts in 427 major league innings.

Beyond the significant chance that Harvey may be done for the season, Steven Matz is pitching through a bone spur in his elbow that will also likely require surgery at some point.

Mets RHP Zack Wheeler has experienced a two setbacks in his rehab from Tommy John surgery and is not expected back until the end August, early September, according to multiple reports.

Boras said the issue explains why Harvey had produced underwhelming numbers this season. Thompson diagnosed Harvey on Thursday, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said.

“He’s optimistic. He’s disappointed”, manager Terry Collins said. “He didn’t make any excuses”, Collins said. “We certainly support him. I know you can walk over on the other side of the field right now and they’re not going to feel sorry for us”.

The Mets (47-38) are now three games behind the Nationals for second place in the NL East.

For now, swingman Logan Verrett will take Harvey’s spot in the rotation. He is 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA.
