One week after officially beginning the process of cutting ties with Jose Reyes, the Rockies have placed their high priced shortstop on release waivers. According to the Newsday duo, the Mets haven’t made a final decision, but a deal could come together this weekend.
The hesitation on the Mets’ part – like that of most teams – is the baggage he brings, having been suspended 52 games this season for a domestic violence incident in the offseason involving his wife.
Reyes signed a $106 million, six-year contract with Miami ahead of the 2012 season.
According to the NY Post, Reyes grabbed his wife Katherine Ramirez by the throat and shoved her into a sliding glass door – resulting in multiple injuries and a trip to the hospital.
Any team that signs Reyes would have to pay him only the major league minimum, prorated. Reyes has served the suspension and is now ready to play for any team that will have him and that could be the team with which he began his career.
If the Mets and Jose Reyes want a reunion, the biggest remaining obstacle has been removed.

After designating Reyes for assignment last week, the Rockies today requested waivers to grant him his unconditional release. The Rockies surely hoped to get some salary relief in a trade, even if it meant receiving non-prospects in return. Also, Mets officials believe that Reyes could be welcomed back to Flushing if he is fully committed to atoning for his behavior and willing to help raise awareness for domestic-violence issues. NY fans are against acquiring Reyes specfically because of the domestic abuse he’s been accused of in the very recent past. The Mets aren’t going to go out of their way to acquire Reyes, but if he signs a team friendly deal maybe something can happen between them.
