Mets LHP Matz scratched after renewed shoulder soreness

New York Mets left-hander Steven Matz was scratched from his scheduled start on Friday against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies and is unlikely to pitch again this season.

“This is one of those uh-oh moments”, Alderson said.

Early Thursday afternoon, the Mets’ official Twitter page deleted a tweet promoting Matz’s return to the rotation, a foreboding sign.

The left hander said he is hopeful he will pitch again this season and that there have not been discussions of shutting him down.

Asked if he’s scared for his future, Matz said, “No, I don’t have any worries”. “I woke up today and I was feeling similar symptoms to back about a month ago or so. But I figured he might be one of them”.

As for who takes the ball on Friday, it looks like Gabriel Ynoa will make his second career start after his surprising outstanding performance against Minnesota on Sunday. It’s got to be day by day. “When you’re talking about the shoulder, you’re talking about serious territory, so it’s got to really calm down before we’d consider getting him back out there”.

“It’s going to be very hard to see … unless he has a miraculous recovery of some sort”. Matz had been pitching with a bone spur in his left elbow. Matz was due to start tonight if he felt fine Thursday morning following Wednesday’s bullpen session. “We’ll just wait to see what the next few days have in store”. “It’s got to be a focus”.

The odds of that are looking dicey after the club’s recent sweep at the hands of the lowly Braves and now this new setback.

NY began the night tied with St. Louis and San Francisco for the two NL wild card spots.

Remember that time last week when the Mets said Jacob deGrom would return to the rotation, but then he didn’t?

“I just started shaking my head”, Collins said.
