Mets offense silent in loss to Nationals, presented by WB Mason

Time is running out for the New York Mets, who fell 10 games behind the first-place Washington Nationals in the National League East following an 8-1 loss Monday night. Jay Bruce defused a bases-loaded rally in the first inning by striking out for the second out, and Fernando Salas allowed a homer to Wilson Ramos in the seventh. It was Rivera’s first major league homer. In Tuesday’s game, the Mets evened it up with a 4-3 win in 10 innings.

“All I could do was go up there and try to have a good at-bat”, Rivera said. Both pitchers have spent most of the year in the Minors, but have contributed in important spots down the stretch. The magic number for Washington to clinch the division is now seven while the Mets hold a half-game lead for the second wild card. NY has won eight of its last 10 and is 17-6 since August 20, gaining 3 1/2 games on Washington in that stretch.

Jerry Blevins struck out Daniel Murphy to end the game with the former Met representing the winning run.

The Mets had chances to get back in the game despite Montero putting them in a five-run hole, but they couldn’t get the big hit. I don’t care who we’re playing, they’re big games. “You’ve got to win this game tonight with Noah on the mound”. He allowed four in that September 2 game and they played a factor in the two runs he yielded in the 4-1 loss at Citi Field. The move backfired as Rendon then delivered his 18th homer of the season to put Washington ahead 6-1. Three of them didn’t get out of the infield, and the game’s tied. We certainly understand it.

“He’s so good and an MVP candidate for a reason”, Blevins said. You can connect with him on Facebook and also on Twitter. That, obviously, wound up being the only run scored in the game.

“It is hard. It is going to be hard”, Collins said of trying to put the best lineup on the field.

He gave up four walks and six hits in five scoreless innings in his last start, a 6-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.

Syndergaard struck out 10 batters Tuesday, which gives him 205 for the season. Rzepczynski has yielded four hits and three walks in 8 1/3 innings since joining the Nationals.

Up next: The Nats are off Thursday before moving on to Atlanta to play the Braves.

Mets: LHP Steven Matz (left shoulder tightness), on the disabled list retroactive to August 15, felt “fine” throwing a 20-pitch bullpen session for Single-A Port St. Lucie, Mets manager Terry Collins said. It was the third hit of the evening for the Pride of Throgs Neck, an engaging, never-drafted local making his first major-league start of the season, and rapping his first major-league home run ever.

Manager Terry Collins was not sure who would start the next time Montero’s turn comes up, but he ruled out giving the right-hander another opportunity.

Robert Gsellman stifled the Nationals for the second time in two weeks, firing 5 2/3 scoreless innings.

Gsellman kept pace with Roark and produced his second fantastic outing against the Nationals this month, and has now allowed just one run in 11 2/3 innings against them this season.

Washington, D.C.-The New York Mets entered today’s game with the Washington Nationals looking to pick up their seventh consecutive series victory and climb ten games over.500, a plateau they have yet to reach this season.

Daniel Murphy and the Nats 9th inning comeback was not enough Tuesday night against the Mets
