Mets overpower Yankees in 7-1 win
A sellout crowd at Yankee Stadium and a fired-up Mark Teixeira pumped some new vigor into the old Subway Series.

The Yankees first baseman was right in the middle of everything from a big home run to a big confrontation to a truly freakish stare down.
The 2009 World Series champion and 14-time MLB All-Star has seen his playing time diminish significantly this season and manager Joe Girardi didn’t exactly do much to quell the belief that the trend will continue. It’s been really hard right-handed.
Teixeira reached base four times tonight.
Steven Matz admits he is frustrated. “I think everyone in here understands that they’re going to have to pick up the slack and play good baseball”. It wasn’t a particularly unsafe pitch, but Teixeira does have the bad knee, and he certainly didn’t appreciate being hit.
Matz hit Teixeira with the first pitch of that at-bat, and it set Teixeira off once he came back to his feet.
“I feel like I’ve been getting traded to the Mets for over a year now”, he said.
“Are you kidding me!” “If it was on objective, it’s uncalled for”.
Wednesday’s Say Hey, Baseball recognizes that time might be short for A-Rod in New York, Joey Votto’s heel work is incredible, and Trevor Story’s season might be over. I think everyone went and told him, “Bro, he doesn’t have your signs'”. Hansel Robles and Teixeira also jawed at each other in the seventh.
“That was amusing”, Teixeira said. Staring me down and saying something. I couldn’t hear him because of the crowd, so I just started having some fun with him. I didn’t have his signs, I was – I was breathing. While walking to the dugout, Robles barked at Teixeira. “Don’t try to challenge me to a duel”.
For my game story, I focused on Luis Severino’s dominant 4.1 innings out of the bullpen. We were really pleased with what we saw, and Larry actually worked with him before the game on it a little bit.
“I was thinking like a reliever”, he said. His actions. The way he’s carrying himself. Alejandro de Aza was in center and hit a go-ahead two-run homer. “The rhythm was better, and we were working a lot faster, so it was good”.
Tanaka (7-4) lasted 6 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits and seven earned runs – his most since coming to the major leagues in 2014 – as his ERA rose to 3.46. It was a bad time to let the ball get away from me. Fastball command, he said, was the issue.
Think a few guys in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre recognize an opportunity to be called up soon? He has nine homers and 29 RBIs this year, and only four hits in his last 37 at-bats.
Matz allowed six runs and six hits in six innings.
The Mets tacked on four runs in the seventh to turn it into a blowout. Aaron Judge had two hits including a double, and Tyler Austin had three hits including a double.
Teixeira gave the Yankees the lead for good when he homered off Steven Matz (8-8) with two outs in the second. If that’s the case, Teixeira was not ripping the grounds crew. Going to be interesting to see if he’s back in the lineup tomorrow. Alex Rodriguez has overwhelming career numbers against Mets starter Bartolo Colon. Didi Gregorius delivered an RBI double later in the inning, and Matz was behind the rest of the night.
Rodriguez sucks this season-he’s hit.204/.252/.356 in 216 at-bats-but so does everyone else in that Yankees lineup.
New York Yankees’ Chase Headley follows through on a two-run double during the first inning of a baseball game against the New York Mets, Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, in New York. A James Loney groundout sandwiched around a pair of strikeouts cut the deficit to 6-4. What Severino did. I thought Romine did a tremendous job.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gary Sanchez picked up his first big league hit, when he singled to lead off the inning.
