Mets Pitcher Matt Harvey To Have Season-Ending Surgery
The right-hander didn’t complain of any pain after Monday’s outing against the Miami Marlins, but he did allow six runs (five earned) on 11 hits over just 3 2/3 innings.

Mets pitcher Matt Harvey is weighing season-ending surgery.
The surgery will result in Harvey missing the rest of the 2016 season.
The former ace will have surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, sidelining the New York Mets pitcher until next year.
The Mets say Matt Harvey will have season-ending surgery for his thoracic outlet syndrome injury. The time table for Harvey’s return following the corrective surgery, to be performed by Dr. Thompson, is not immediately known, though he will not pitch again in 2016.
It has been a tumultuous season for Harvey, who started behind the eight-ball right away.
Adam Rubin of ESPN.com reported the news, and Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball noted Harvey has been having trouble feeling his fingertips all season.
The 27-year-old struggled mightily this season, pitching to a 4-10 record with a 4.86 ERA through 92-and-two-thirds innings (17 starts). Jaime Garcia underwent a procedure in 2014, and was wonderful (albeit limited in innings) in 2015, and has been just average this year.
Harvey’s surgery will be to address his thoracic outlet syndrome.
“He’s optimistic. He’s disappointed”, manager Terry Collins said.
Collins has said Verrett likely will get a chance to hold down that spot in the rotation. Alderson said they are confident, albeit not certain, he will pitch for the team this year and in the meantime will monitor the trade market ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. And Harvey has faced a lot of bad offenses, too; he’s pitched against the Braves four times, the Phillies, the Reds, the Padres, the Brewers, and the White Sox.
The Mets (47-38) are now three games behind the Nationals for second place in the NL East. They are hosting Washington for a four-game series in NY for their final series before the All-Star break.

Alderson did not rule out that the team could pursue another starting pitcher this month, although there are internal options beyond Verrett such as Gabriel Ynoa, Sean Gilmartin and Seth Lugo.
