Mets rookie RHP Lugo exits with leg injury

Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright lost his glove trying to tag out Yoenis Cespedes in a weird play and lost the game, too, when Alejandro De Aza’s homer and five RBIs sent the New York Mets over St. Louis 10-6 Thursday night.

In his final inning of work in what would become a 10-6 loss to the New York Mets at Busch Stadium, Wainwright vented on the field like he rarely has.

He only gave up two earned runs; but, only saw five innings on the hill, with three strikeouts.

Quite possibly one of the more perplexing plays I have seen occurred in last night’s game when Yoenis Cespedes tried to advance from first to third on Jame Loney’s bloop single only he was clearly tagged out by Wainwright.

Wainwright covered the base and Moss retrieved the ball and threw low to third. The ruling was upheld that Cespedes was safe at third to the surprise of both dugouts, broadcast booths, crowd, and anyone watching.

It could have been a 3-0 deficit for the Cardinals had a call or a play gone the Cardinals’ way in the fifth inning. De Aza hit a three-run homer, extending the Mets’ lead to seven. Wainwright, for his part, also looked like he has never seen it before.

“He said that when I pulled out the glove, I had to show possession”, Wainwright said. “We got to put some wins on the board, get some streaks going and get back in the hunt here”.

Jayson Werth’s solo home run staked Washington to a 1-0 lead.

Said Collins: “Every time I turn around something unexpected is popping up, but Seth did a great job”.

Matt Carpenter, Randal Grichuk and Stephen Piscotty homered off Mets starter Jacob deGrom, powering the Cardinals past NY 8-1 Wednesday in St. Louis. The injury would force Lugo from the contest, and the bullpen had a much trickier time protecting that lead than they should have. With two on and two out, Flores hit a grounder to shortstop Greg Garcia, who misplayed it into a run.

Noah Syndergaard went eight shutout innings Sunday in San Francisco, and Colon gave the team a solid performance a day earlier.

Lugo (1-2) held the Cardinals to two hits through five.

WASHINGTON – Max Scherzer allowed two hits over eight innings and Bryce Harper’s two-run double helped the Washington Nationals avoid a four-game home-and-home sweep with a 4-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.

The Angels also prevented J.A. Happ from becoming the first 18-game victor in the majors.

After most of their losses this year, the St. Louis Cardinals have consistently reminded everyone that there’s still plenty of time left in the season. Jedd Gyorko pumped out a single and Brandon Moss sends the two-seamer off the first baseline foul pole for a two-run homer.

“When I seem to miss it seems to go right down the middle and it seems to get out of the park or off the wall”, deGrom said. The Marlins lost 5-2 to the Kansas City Royals.
