Mets says golf not cause for Cespedes going on DL

New York Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes has been put on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore right quadriceps, and a feisty manager Terry Collins has teed off on those wondering whether the outfielder aggravated his injury playing golf.

Bruce belted a three-run homer for his first hit as a Met, ending an 0-for-10 skid since his deadline acquisition from the Reds with a towering shot to right-center in a four-run fifth inning against Yanks starter Nate Eovaldi.

After each team won once at Citi Field earlier this week, the Mets took the wrapup of the two-game set in the Bronx.

The four runs held up on this night as Bartolo Colon (10-6) threw 6ª innings of one-run ball, and the bullpen tossed 2¤ scoreless innings to grab a split of the Subway Series.

After Curtis Granderson reached on a double one out later, Eovaldi (9-8) exacerbated his troubles by attempting and failing to nail Granderson going back to the bag on Alejandro De Aza’s comebacker.

Hours after he teed off on reporters wanting to know if Yoenis Cespedes’ trips to the golf course resulted in an injury, New York Mets manager Terry Collins watched his newest bat drive a ball almost 400 feet.

The Mets certainly will need more of that out of Bruce (26 homers this season) now that Yoenis Cespedes finally has landed on the disabled list due to his lingering quad issue. He told the assembled press yesterday that he has informed Cespedes to quit it with the golfing for the duration of his DL stint. You saw a lot of 91s up there. On the other hand, he wanted to try to play through it.

“(Bruce) is big addition… Jay Bruce is still going to be a factor.

Collins on Colon: “I thought tonight maybe he had his best stuff all year”. He allowed two runs and three hits in six innings and walked six – matching his career high. “Those numbers are from a long time ago”, Joe Girardi said. Even with their win last night, the Mets are now a season-worst eight games behind the Nationals in the NL East, and a game behind both the Marlins and Cardinals for the second wild card spot.
