Mets sign Alejandro De Aza to 1-year deal

Due to Juan Lagares’ struggles against right-handed pitching, the Mets set out this offseason to find a lefty bat to pair with him in center field.

Doughty, playing his final game for Western Kentucky , spotted USF a 14-0 lead and spent much of the first half looking spotty. The South Florida defense has held 6 of 7 Conference opponents below their season scoring average, and one equaled it.

De Aza and Lagares will be flanked by Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto in the outfield.

With De Aza in the fold, the only position player role that appears up in the air is that of a right-handed hitting backup outfielder who can play first base if needed.

De Aza had a. 755 OPS last season in 114 games in the majors.

De Aza, 31, spent 2015 with three teams – Baltimore, Boston and San Francisco – and hit a combined. He’s not a fit for the Mets, but the team apparently thinks otherwise. The Mets will get the most out of him by using him as a fourth outfielder. And while there’s hope Lagares will be close to 100 percent in 2016, it’s not something the Mets can bank on. A few weeks later, they’ve gone out and signed De Aza, who’s a awful defensive center fielder. This could be a hint that the Mets plan on not re-signing Yoenis Cespedes, and go down a cheaper road.

This reeks of ownership either not having the money to adequately fill the team’s needs or refusing to spend what they do have.
