Having flopped with the New York Jets, Tim Tebow will try to revive his career as an outfielder with the Mets.
Tebow, a high school baseball player, did a tryout for MLB teams.
The Big Apple club insists that the move is not a publicity stunt and they are genuinely interested in the former quarterback’s athletic prowess. There’s no guarantee he sticks with his pursuit beyond Instructional League this fall, let alone does enough to convince the Mets to invite him to 2017 spring training.
Eight days after he worked out in front of 28 major league teams, Tim Tebow will sign a minor league deal with with the New York Mets, the team announced Thursday morning.
Tebow, who is 29, has not played any organized baseball at any level since high school in Florida over 11 years ago.
Financial terms of the deal with the former Heisman Trophy victor were not made public.
The 29-year-old has called recruiters Major League Baseball teams to display in a public workout. “This is an opportunity for us to associate with excellence”, Alderson gushed.
“While I and the organization are mindful of the novel nature of this situation, ” Alderson said, “this decision was strictly driven by baseball”.
“This is a classic player development opportunity for us to develop a player and see where it goes, ” Alderson said.
He said he began exploring a return to the sport – even working out – in 2015, when then-Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly called.
Tebow was selected in the first round of the 2010 National Football League draft after a stellar college career at the University of Florida. I understand this isn’t a typical “one-off” where we evaluate the tools and make a judgment. A stint in winter ball is possible, though Alderson cautioned that more “individualized instruction” may still be necessary.

Tebow will participate in the Mets instructional league. “I just get to go pursue my passion”. “That’s what’s great about America”. Other than Robert Redford in “The Natural”, how many actors do you know who can hit a baseball farther than 400 feet?
