Mets slugger Cespedes going on DL with quadriceps injury

New York Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes can’t play the outfield, but can golf without an issue. Michael Conforto could see increased playing time in Cespedes’ absence, but the team recalled Brandon Nimmo to replace Cespedes on the 25-man roster and should be in the mix as well. After the Mets wrap up the Subway Series on Thursday, they will hit the road for a three-game series against the Tigers. He was not available to comment when Cespedes was again nursing the quad, and the media was not getting the answer that Cespedes was put on the disabled list.

Nimmo was sent down Tuesday when All-Star right fielder Jay Bruce reported to the Mets, a day after he was acquired from Cincinnati.

While Cespedes has failed to serve as a mainstay in the Mets’ lineup as of late, it appears that he re-injured himself during his final at bat of Wednesday’s 9-5 loss at the hands of the Yankees. After the weekend, when the Mets return to National League ballparks, a decision will be made about whether Cespedes will require a DL stint, general manager Sandy Alderson said.

Prior to the game on Wednesday, Cespedes was out playing golf, which is not a smart move considering he was hurting already. Collins deemed Cespedes to be closer to 80-85 percent. Bruce went 0 for 4 with a walk, dropping to 0 for 8 with the Mets. The loss of Cespedes at such a crucial time in the season probably doesn’t settle well with the Met faithful. But after the Mets followed by loading the bases with nobody out, they scored just once more in the inning.

“The problem is scoring runs”, Alderson said. Collins said. “No, I don’t have any problem with it”. “One night we’ll hit four homers and the next night we leave the bases loaded”.

For one more night, however, it was more of the same.
