Mets spoil Nationals ninth-inning comeback, win in extra innings

NY (76-68) is very much in the NL wild-card hunt, and that is one reason manager Terry Collins didn’t have much patience with starting pitcher Rafael Montero, who walked two with the bases loaded in the first inning and gave up six runs overall before he was lifted in the second.

“My two-seamer had late movement”.

“Definitely, it’s big”, Gsellman said.

Roark has a better career ERA (3.03 before Wednesday) than more notable teammates Max Scherzer (3.38) and Stephen Strasburg (3.17).

Harper stayed at home plate for almost a minute and eventually threw his batting gloves up in the air before walking slowly to right field.Trea Turner had two hits for the Nationals, who were 8-2 on the homestand.Roark entered the game 0-2 with a 1.88 ERA in three appearances (two starts) against the Mets this year. Rivera will hopefully be sticking around for awhile, but I said that about Brandon Nimmo when he first came up. “Willie works really hard”.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Mets had an opportunity to gain ground on both of the other teams contending for Wild Card spots in the National League. NY remains a half-game behind the Giants for the first N.L. Wild Card spot and a half-game ahead of the Cardinals for the second.

“We’ve got ourselves right where we need to be”, Collins said. He is hitting less than.200 since joining the Mets after a trade with the Cincinnati Reds.

“It’s pretty frustrating, because he does have good stuff”, Collins said. “I am not going to make any excuses”.

Bruce is now hitting.192 with four homers since joining the Mets, and Collins admitted he would consider sitting Bruce more often if he had an alternative option. He went five innings, gave up three runs on nine hits, struck out six, and walked two in the loss.

Reliever Blake Treinen pitched the eighth and Mark Melancon got the final three outs for his 42 save.

New York Mets’ Jose Reyes argues a called strike with home plate umpire CB Bucknor, with Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos (40) nearby, during the fifth inning of a baseball game at Nationals Park, Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016, in Washington. It’s also true they dropped two of three to the Nationals.

In his four starts this year, he has pitched at least five innings each time, and he has not allowed more than four runs in an outing despite facing challenging road assignments such as in tiny Camden Yards against the Baltimore Orioles and Citi Field against the Mets earlier this month. A potential sweep would have halted the team’s momentum, and the Mets can’t afford to lose games that Syndergaard starts. The Nationals’ bullpen made that lead stand up.

Dusty Baker acknowledged after that outing by the Washington Nationals’ 29-year-old right-hander, that Roark wasn’t quite as sharp as he usually is on the mound. Bench coach Chris Speier filled in for the manager.

The Nationals say Baker is expected to rejoin the team on Friday night for its series opener with the Atlanta Braves. Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard (13-8) has 205 strikeouts this year after recording 10 on Tuesday against the Nationals.

He now has struck out double-digit batters in 10 career games and recorded his 200th career strikeout when he fanned Danny Espinosa in the fifth.

The Mets (76-68) are 10 games behind Washington in the NL East. Blevins fanned INF Daniel Murphy in the 10th inning for the final out and his first save since September 4, 2012, also at Washington when he pitched for the Oakland A’s.
