Mets star deGrom likely done for season with elbow injury

“I think it’s unlikely that he will pitch the rest of the season”, Alderson said (via ESPN). That ailment turned out to a problem with the ulnar nerve in his right elbow, and the 28-year-old right-hander will need surgery to correct it.

They should all be healthy next season, but as hard as pitchers throw these days, they’re seemingly more fragile than ever.

DeGrom will need surgery but has not decided whether he will wait until the end of the season to have it. “I can’t give you, ‘yeah, I’m going to get a base hit.’ I can’t say that”. He ran sprints and then took his spot in the outfield shagging flies.

“Just trying to lob it into the bucket”, deGrom said according to Yahoo Sports. “One throw, that I felt it on, and it was definitely disappointing”. Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 15.19 ERA) will start vs. the Twins.

After his start on September 1, deGrom was shut down with what was said to be right forearm discomfort.

Earlier in the day, DeGrom said he has been experiencing numbness in his ring and pinkie fingers for weeks, and that there was actual pain when he was last on the mound September 1, when he gave up three runs in five innings and suffered a third loss in as many starts.

“I haven’t felt it all year. It might’ve been five or six starts ago”, he said.

And while Steven Matz is still a possibility, does anybody really believe he is going to have no further issues after already being sidelined this season with a bone spur in his elbow and an impingement in his shoulder? There is a typical three-month recovery period. “We’ll see. It’s likely that this will require a surgical fix, not a significant surgical procedure with respect to risk going forward”.

“He was hoping to be able to pitch through it, but given the fact that this thing flares up at unpredictable times and under unpredictable circumstances, I think it’s unlikely he’ll pitch again this season”.

For the Mets, it has been one injury after another this season.

Thousands of fans donned Mets caps with brunette locks flowing out the back at Citi Field on Saturday night – a promotional giveaway by the defending NL champs to honor follicly gifted right-hander Jacob deGrom. The Mets are 9.5 games out of first place in the NL East behind Washington, so the best chance the Mets have to make the postseason will come via the wild card.

“You have to be resilient”, Collins said. “I actually watched Jake’s bullpen yesterday and it was outstanding”.

“We got to get there first, and hopefully I can help the team get there”, Duda said. “We’ll go from there”.

Especially since Syndergaard nearly certainly now would pitch the wild-card game, he would be available to start only Game 3 of a potential five-game division series with the Cubs, and perhaps an inning or two in relief in a Game 5. Last year, Colon (31), deGrom (30), Harvey (29) and Jon Niese (29) all did so.
