Mets’ starter Bartolo Colon exits against Royals after just one batter
The teams split a two-game series in Kansas City to open the regular season.

Four pitches into the game, Whit Merrifield hit a line drive up the middle that Colon attempted to field. In an attempt to make a play on the ball, Colon extended his throwing hand rather than using his glove. Though the incident looked, and probably was, painful Colon’s X-rays came back negative for any breaks or fractures and he was diagnosed on his right hand with a thumb bruise. He had been mired in a deep slump and now he had to face a pesky Royals lineup that doesn’t strike out often.
NOTES: The Mets activated C Travis d’Arnaud (right rotator cuff) from the 15-day disabled list and optioned C Kevin Plawecki to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Robles departed after his yeoman’s effort, leaving a sticky situation for Erik Goeddel. Cain was able to move up to third as the inning progressed but went no further when Robles struck out Cheslor Cuthbert to end the inning.
Goeddel logged two scoreless innings.
Escobar and Orlando had two hits apiece for the Royals.
Robles ultimately earned the win by setting career highs with 65 pitches spanning 3ª innings, and worked around a leadoff double in the fourth. Brett Eibner hit a weak grounder that found a hole and put the Royals on the board.
Robles surrendered five hits and struck out six.
Verrett provided valuable innings as a swingman earlier this season, pitching innings as both a starter and reliever.
Elsewhere, the Astros rallied for a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels, with Carlos Correa hitting a two-run single to right-center field with no outs in the ninth inning, the Detroit Tigers rallied from two down to beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2, and Arizona won its fifth straight with a 4-2 win at Toronto.
New York Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (13) and right fielder Curtis Granderson (3) react after the New York Mets defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1 at Citi Field.

The Mets once again relied on the long ball to score their runs, and Cabrera’s homer in the first off Ian Kennedy (5-6) and Cespedes’ blast in the fourth proved to be enough. Addison Reed then worked a flawless eighth before Jeurys Familia finished the job with a clean ninth inning, recording his 23rd save in as many chances this season. On this night though it was no problem for that trio. Apparently they went for two after the second touchdown. However, there was a bit of unfortunate luck involved for Colon as well.
